5 Ways to Trot of the Extra Turkey | Mairead Callahan | Improving Health blog by CareATC, Inc.As hard as you may have tried, chances are that you may have indulged a little too much over the Thanksgiving Holiday. Not to worry! Jump right back into your healthy lifestyle and you will be back on track in no time!

Try one of these five ways to get moving and trot off the extra turkey this week.

1. Walk it off

Walking has incredible health benefits, including lowering the risk of coronary heart disease, improving blood pressure, improving blood sugar and blood lipids, and even reducing the risk of osteoporosis. If you use a pedometer or another device to track your daily steps, shoot for a goal of 10,000 steps a day!

Increase your steps by taking an extra walk, parking far away from the building, or opting to take the stairs. You will trot off that extra turkey in no time!

2. Have a Power Lunch Break

Many working professionals use busy schedules as an excuse to avoid exercise. Well, what about working out during a lunch break? Use the majority of the lunch hour to get moving! Head to the local gym, walk around the building, or simply climb the stairs a couple extra times.

If you want to get really ambitious, look up some office exercises and choose a few that look good to you! There are many exercises you can do right at your desk to stay active!

3. Refocus with Yoga

Yoga is great for the mind and the body. Yoga increases flexibility, muscle tone, and strength. It also improves energy, helps balance your metabolism, and assists in weight loss. Yoga is not simply stretching; it improves strength and burns calories.

There are also hot yoga classes, which are performed in a heated room, causing participants to sweat more and work harder to maintain their breath and balance. Look up a yoga studio and refocus on your health by taking a class this week.

4. Try a New Exercise Class

It is easy to become bored with an exercise routine. Jump start your healthy holidays by trying a new class! Yoga, spinning, body pump, or kickboxing are all excellent options, but the list truly could go on for pages. Already a member of a gym? Check out the schedule and try something new!

If you are not a member of a gym or workout studio in your area, the holidays are a perfect time to join! If you have a new membership, you may be more motivated to use it to stay healthy throughout the holidays!

5. Stick to your Routine

Maybe you love your workout routine and don’t want to change a thing. That is awesome! If you have something that is working for you, stick to it! Jump right back into your healthy routine and trot off that turkey just like it was any other week!

Find little ways to keep you motivated throughout the holidays. Leave yourself encouraging post-it notes around the house or invite a friend to workout with you once or twice a week. Whatever keeps you moving and motivated is the perfect plan!
