Keeping Trim During Holiday Travel | Mairead Callahan, RDN, CPT | Improving Health blog by CareATC, Inc.The busiest travel season of the year is just around the corner. Long layovers, endless traffic, and delayed flights are practically inevitable, so be prepared!

If you are sitting in the airport with a growling stomach and nothing to eat, you will be much more inclined to give in to those enticing aromas emanating from the food court.

Pack your bag with some healthy options! If you have snacks readily available, you can control your hungry and resist traveling temptations. Think about this: is that food court pizza really worth it to you? Or would you rather have one of Grandmom’s holiday cookies as a treat when you get home?

Healthy eating is all about balance, and making the right decision 90% of the time, while treating yourself 10%. Check out this list of 20 portable, healthy snacks and see what looks good to you!

What if I forget to pack snacks?

If you do forget your snacks and are subject to the temptations of the food court or the drive through, still focus on making healthy choices. There are healthy food options to choose, you just need to look for them!

  • Yogurt
  • Fruit
  • Whole grain cereal bars
  • Whole wheat vegetable wrap
  • Carrots
  • Hummus
  • Oatmeal
  • Unsalted nuts
  • Vegetable Soup

I will leave you with one more traveling tip: always carry a water bottle. Refill it throughout the day to keep hydrated. Staying hydrated can help to manage hunger and if you have your water bottle in hand, you will not be tempted to grab sugary drinks! If carbonation is your thing, feel free to grab flavored seltzer water. It will provide carbonation, without costing calories.

Healthy Travels!
