6 Screenings Every Man Should Know About

| June 3, 2025 | By

250603-CATC-BP-Image-Mens-HealthJune is Men’s Health Month—a time to shine a spotlight on the unique health challenges men face and encourage proactive steps toward better well-being. One of the most effective ways men can take charge of their health is by staying current with preventive screenings. These tests detect potential health issues early when they’re most treatable, and can make a significant difference in long-term health outcomes.

Why Preventative Screenings Matter

Men are statistically less likely than women to visit a doctor regularly, and many health conditions that affect men—such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain cancers—can develop without obvious symptoms. Preventive screenings are designed to catch these conditions before symptoms appear, allowing for early intervention and effective treatment.

For example, high blood pressure is known as the “silent killer” because the condition often has no symptoms but can lead to heart attacks or strokes if left untreated. A simple blood pressure check can identify this risk early. Similarly, cholesterol screenings, blood glucose tests, and prostate exams can help detect issues before they become serious.

Key Screenings Every Man Should Consider

Depending on age, family history, and lifestyle, men should talk to their primary care provider about the following screenings:

  • Blood Pressure: At least once every two years, or more frequently if elevated.
  • Cholesterol: Starting at age 35, or earlier if there are risk factors like smoking or diabetes.
  • Diabetes: Request testing A1C levels, especially for men who are overweight or have a family history.
  • Colorectal Cancer: Starting at age 45, or earlier if there’s a family history.
  • Prostate Health: Discuss PSA testing with your doctor, especially if you're over 50 or at a higher risk.
  • Mental Health: Depression and anxiety are unfortunately common but often overlooked. Mental health screenings can help identify issues early and connect you with the support you need.

Taking the First Step

The first step toward better health is often the hardest—but it’s also the most important. Scheduling a wellness visit with a primary care provider is a great place to start. During this visit, your provider can review your health history, recommend appropriate screenings, and help you set goals for improving your overall well-being.
