The recent shooting death of two journalists by a disturbed coworker has brought workplace violence into the minds of millions, but due to Federal, State, and City laws on hiring discrimination, it can be difficult to make hiring decisions based on a candidate's criminal or mental health record.
Workplace violence is hard to predict. By instituting strict company policies regarding threats of violence, cultivating good mental health among workers, and dealing with problems quickly, these issues can be prevented in most cases.
Workplace violence almost always results from known issues which escalate out of control. By having the proper channels ready for threats as they arise, employees are able to feel safe at work.
