D.C. Employers to Provide Transportation Benefits | Ginger Sullivan | HR Insights blog by CareATC, Inc.In an interesting national precedent, District of Columbia employers will be required to provide transportation benefits to employees in 2016.

Starting on January 1, these measures will go into effect for employers with 20 or more employees.

There are a range of transportation benefits which may be offered:

  1. A pre-tax payroll withholding election for highway vehicle, public transit, or bicycle travel
  2. Employer-supplied transit passes or reimbursement thereof
  3. Employer-provided vanpool or bus services

In 2017, D.C.'s mayor may also decide to extend the program to employers with fewer than 20 employees.

Methods for enforcing the new policy, which is the result of the Sustainable D.C. Omnibus Amendment Act of 2014, have not yet been determined.
