A growing trend among American companies is to increase variable pay spending, while leaving overall base pay relatively unchanged.
Variable pay includes bonuses, incentives, profit sharing, and the like. It is a way for a company to promote productivity and achievement, without increasing their base compensation spending.
This trend is true of more than 90% of companies surveyed. In decades past, companies have spent more on salary and less on variable pay.
But it seems this new habit is sticking, leaving many to wonder what impact this will have on American workers.
