A Beginner's Guide to Better Health in the Workplace [Free Guide] | Employer Healthcare Strategies blog by CareATC, Inc.It's no secret that Americans are an unhealthy lot. In addition to heart disease being the number one cause of death in the United States, a third of all adults and one-fifth of those aged 6-19 are clinically obese.

Can it get worse? You bet it can. Dr. Youfa Wang recently predicted that if current trends remain, 100% of the American population will be overweight or obese by 2048. This astounding prediction is based on science, mathematics, and the true reality of the health care epidemic that our nation is experiencing.

Because of the barriers associated with quality healthcare, many American adults avoid seeking a primary care physician until the seriousness of their issues outweigh the hassles involved. Instead, they utilize Urgent Care or ER services, increasing cost to the health plan. Moreover, chronic conditions that go un-managed for long periods of time usually manifest into catastrophic, costly issues, such as heart disease or stroke.

Considering the state of health care in America, it’s more important than ever for employers to seek out creative ways to engage employees and encourage healthier lifestyles.

Statistics provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that the average American who works a full-time job spends more than a third of his or her day, five days out of the week, at their place of employment. As three-quarters of the costs associated with health care can be attributed to chronic, but mostly preventable conditions like heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and arthritis, the logical setting for employee health improvement is at, or near the workplace.
