7 Tricks and Treats for a Happy and Healthy Halloween | Mairead Callahan, RDN, CPT | Improving Health blog by CareATC, Inc.Whether you are getting the kids ready for trick-or-treating or having a couple of friends over for some Halloween fun, chances are you are looking for some healthy treats to serve.

We've got some festive ideas to get guests of any age in the Halloween spirit without sacrificing healthy eating!

1. Halloween Popcorn Trail Mix

For this treat simply take the first 6 healthy ingredients listed below, mix them together, and then drizzle and toss with honey. It is fast, simple, and delicious!

  • Air popped popcorn (6 cups)
  • Whole wheat pretzels (1 cup)
  • Raisins or dried cranberries (1/4 cup)
  • Almonds (2 tbsp.)
  • Pumpkin seeds (2 tbsp.)
  • Dark chocolate chips (2 tbsp.)
  • Honey (2 tbsp.)

2. BOO-nanas

Take a half of a peeled banana and use raisins or dark chocolate chips to make the eyes and mouth of a ghost. You could also dip these in almond bark and freeze for a fun treat.

3. Pumpkin Oranges

Take a peeled clementine or orange and stick a piece of celery on top to make the stem of your pumpkin.

4. Witch's Fingers

There are a few ways to make this fun snack. Get creative!

  1. Take a string cheese and on the end, place a dab hummus. On top of the hummus, place a small fingernail shaped sliver of red or green pepper to make the appearance of a witch’s fingernail.
  2. Take a peeled carrot and cut it into a finger-like shape. Then, place a dab of peanut butter on the end of the carrot. On top of the peanut butter, stick a piece of apple skin that you’ve cut into the shape of a fingernail.
  3. Cut a peanut butter sandwich into thin, finger-like slivers. Then, place a dab of peanut butter on the one end to hold in place a fingernail shaped apple slice (or apple peel).

5. Spider-Web Pizza

Take a mini pizza crust (preferably whole grain) and spread it with pizza sauce. Then arrange pieces of a low-fat mozzarella string cheese to make the appearance of a web on top of the pizza. Bake as you normally would!

6. Clementine Jack O' Lanterns

Simply take a clementine and with a sharpie draw a Jack O' Lantern face on the skin. This one is fun, simple, and only takes a second!

7. Trick or Treating Tip: Ditch the Pillowcases

One great tip I always tell people for Halloween night is to ditch the pillowcases. If you give a child a pillowcase, he or she is going to try to fill it. Try and find a more sensible sized bag, bucket, or basket to use trick-or-treating. Your child will most likely collect less candy and be more satisfied than if he or she were peering into a pillowcase that is only an eighth full. Less candy and a happier child makes for a win-win!

Happy Healthy Halloween!
