Have you tried infused water? | Mairead Callahan, RDN, CPT | Improving Health blog by CareATC, Inc.We all know that sugary drinks aren’t good for us, so why do people keep going back to them? Often times, it is because they want something more than plain water.

Although I love water, I can appreciate the need for something with a little more jazz. That’s where infused water can come in.

Make your own infused water, instead of buying flavored water at the store.

Why is it better homemade? Because the water found on the grocery store shelves can contain additives and “natural flavors”.

“Natural flavors” is one of those catchall phrases companies use, meaning it could be flavored with almost anything. Instead of gambling with these “natural flavors”, select your own from the garden or produce aisle!

How do you make infused water?

First, pull together your ingredients. You can infuse water with a number of herbs, spices, fruits, and vegetables. Some of my favorite combinations are:

  • Lemon + Kiwi + Ginger
  • Apple + Raspberry + Blueberry + Lemon Balm
  • Orange + Lemon + Mint
  • Strawberry + Basil
  • Cucumber + Lime

Be sure to rinse any produce and herbs. Fruit and veggies can either be peeled or unpeeled, depending on your preference. Use thin slices or small cubes of fruits and vegetables to intensify the flavor. Choose the bottle you would like to use, add the ingredients to the bottom, and fill to the top with water!

Next comes the hardest part. Place your water in the refrigerator and be patient. Let the water sit for at least an hour, preferably 3 hours for the flavors to infuse. The longer you wait, the more time the flavors have to seep into the water.

The last step is easy – pull your water from the refrigerator and enjoy!
