The Glory of Greek Yogurt | Marla Richards, MS, RD, LD | Improving Health blog by CareATC, Inc.The Greeks contributed a lot to our world, including mythology, literature, Aristotle, the Olympic games, and yogurt!

What we call Greek Yogurt, the Greeks actually refer to as just yogurt. Greek Yogurt is a special type of yogurt, considering it’s not full of added sugar and is packed full of protein.

Removing the lactose and liquid whey is the main process that makes Greek Yogurt. While yogurt does have its healthy benefits, it should be noted that Greek Yogurt is by far the healthier of the two.

The best option would actually be non-fat, plain Greek Yogurt to avoid excess fat and and get lots of protein. Greek Yogurt has a considerably higher amount of protein than regular yogurt, and fortunately, a lot less carbohydrates.

Considering its high protein, Greek Yogurt will also keep you fuller longer than regular yogurt.

Let’s compare a regular serving of Activia yogurt to a non-fat, plain Greek Yogurt:

1/2 cup Activia Vanilla Yogurt
19g total carbohydrates and 5g protein.

1 cup non-fat, plain Greek Yogurt
21g total carbohydrates and 12g protein.

It would appear the non-fat, plain Greek Yogurt takes the win in this comparison! With Greek Yogurt, you can have double the amount with the bonus of additional health benefits.

You can always try a non-fat, flavored Greek Yogurt if plain Greek yogurt is too much to take at this time. Or, you can jazz up your plain Greek Yogurt by adding 1 packet of Stevia and your favorite fruit for a healthy parfait.

There’s even more beauty to Greek Yogurt and all its glory! Non-fat, plain Greek yogurt actually makes for a tasty substitution, especially for sour cream.

Greek Yogurt does well in soups, salad dressings, breakfast parfaits, pancakes, protein smoothies, and tacos among many other dishes making them delicious and healthy!

You’ll never know if you don’t try!
