Stressbusting Secrets You Can Start Now

Stress is a normal body response to both negative and positive situations. When stressed, the body releases hormones that increase your heart and breathing rates. Small amounts of stress to the body can be beneficial, but excessive stress can be a true health hazard impacting your endocrine (hormones), respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, muscular, reproductive, and immune system. Follow these stress busting secrets to stress less in 2017.

1) Schedule Sleep

Schedule sleep into your day like you would anything else. Put it on your calendar and do not let anything or anyone interfere with your sleeping schedule. Try to get 8 hours of sleep each night to wake up feeling refreshed, calm, and ready for the day.

2) Remember to Breathe

Focus on your breath and practice mindful breathing throughout the day. If you notice your breath getting away from you, take a moment and pause. Inhale, count to 10, and exhale. Do this quick mindful breathing exercise whenever you feel overwhelmed.

3) Take a Technology Time Out

Make sure technology is not the focus of your entire day. Give your mind and eyes a break from technology and read a book, walk outside, or even close your eyes for 5 short minutes. It is also beneficial to put technology away at least 30 minutes before you plan to sleep to allow your eyes and mind time to wind down and prepare for good rest.

4) Make Exercise a Priority

Aim to exercise 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days per week. Run, walk, cycle, or swim most days to relieve the stress that has built up inside your body. Exercising clears your mind, while rejuvenating and energizing your body.

5) Say "No"

Remember “no” is an acceptable answer. If you do not have time for something or it is not a priority for your personal life or career, say no. Cherish your down time, that is when you will be most able to destress and recharge for the things you want to do. Prioritize what is important to you and remember it is OK not to do everything!
